Tieguanyin
Tieguanyin is the hallmark of Anxi oolong tea in Fujian Province. Named after the "Iron Goddess of Mercy" (a transliteration of the red-heart Guanyin cultivar), it is the most widely produced and influential oolong variety in China, celebrated for its distinctive "Guanyin Yun" (Goddess charm).
Traditional vs Modern Styles
Two major schools exist: traditional (zheng chao, heavier fermentation and roasting) produces a floral, aged tea suitable for storage; modern "light" style (xiao qing) is less fermented,清香 but not meant for aging. The traditional craft is what creates Tieguanyin's legendary character.
The Guanyin Yun
"Guanyin Yun" is the ineffable quality that distinguishes premium Tieguanyin — a perfect fusion of aroma and taste, with lasting huigan and lingering fragrance. Not all Tieguanyin possesses this quality; it requires superior leaf, traditional craft, and proper aging. This is the mark of truly exceptional tea.
