Da Hong Pao
Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe) is the king of Wuyi rock teas, grown on the cliffs of Jiulong Pool in Wuyi Mountains, Fujian. The legendary tea is said to have cured a scholar who later returned to drape the bushes with red robes in gratitude, creating one of tea culture's most enduring myths.
Rock Essence
Da Hong Pao grows in the crevices of Danxia terrain, absorbing minerals from the rocks — this creates its prized "yanwei" (rock character). Traditional heavy fermentation and roasting produce a complex flavor: floral notes upfront, followed by deep minerality and lingering sweetness.
Authenticity Note
The original mother plants on the cliff face have been protected as cultural heritage since 2006 and are no longer harvested. Today's Da Hong Pao comes from: 1) cuttings of the authentic cultivar, or 2) blends using Rou Gui, Shui Xian, and other Wuyi varieties. True mother-tree Da Hong Pao simply does not exist in the market.
